Nelson Sandgren

* Born December 17, 1917 – Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada
* Childhood in Canada and Chicago, Illinois
* Good Schooling in Chicago was influential in fostering
Sandgren’s interest in drawing and design
* Adolescent years continued to influence him toward an artistic
career with inspiring training at high school in Chicago
and Portland , Oregon
* College years, 1937 – 1943, at Linfield College and the
University of Oregon provided a rich background and
training in painting, drawing and lithography
* Three and one-half years U.S. Army Infantry officer with
overseas duty in Leyte and Luzon, Philippines
* M.F.A. at University of Oregon, 1947
* Old Mexico, 1948 – 6 months at the University of Michoacan
* Began teaching at Oregon State University, September 1948
*Returned to Mexico to study painting, fresco and lithography
with Maestro Alfredo Zalce at the University of
Michoacan, Morelia, for one year – a leave of absence
from Oregon State University, 1951 – 1952
* Post graduate study at the Illinois Institute of Design,
Chicago, 1953
* Taught painting, watercolor, drawing, basic design and lithography
at Oregon State University
* Received four sabbatical leaves while at Oregon State University,
each spent painting, visiting artists and galleries of
art and major museums in Europe with many months residence
in Spain
* Sandgren’s work has been exhibited widely for many years in
one-man exhibitions, invitational and competitive
exhibitions in oil, watercolor and lithography
